South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball http://www.shbgfs.org Girls With Bats Wed, 22 Feb 2012 23:42:04 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.2.1 Great Day At The Players Clinichttp://www.shbgfs.org/great-day-at-the-players-clinic/ http://www.shbgfs.org/great-day-at-the-players-clinic/#comments Wed, 22 Feb 2012 23:42:04 +0000 lauraberg http://www.shbgfs.org/?p=2418 On Saturday, February 18, over 100 SHB players attended our Spring Players Clinic led by the varsity softball team from Edison High School.  Our girls were split into age groups and assigned Edison Players as coaches.  Each age group practiced infield and outfield strategies, hitting, catching and a variety of games and drills.  Lunch was provided by Love At First Bite catering and at the end of the day, the Edison team demonstrated their speed and softball skills to a cheering crowd.   Our SHB players had a chance to speak one-on-one with the Edison team about what it takes to be a successful rec, travel, high-school and soon-to-be-college player.  It was great day and we thank the Edison softball team for spending the time with us!

Dani Miller (Notre Dame) – Senior – Infield – Edison HS, Huntington Beach, Calif., and 50 other student-athletes have been selected for the “Watch List” for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced.  The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, given by the National Governing Body for softball in the United States, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Former SHB Player Goes 5 For 7 In Collegiate Debut.

Former South Huntington Beach Girls Softball player and 2011 Edison HS graduate Ancia Purdy had a great start in her first college softball game.  The Sonoma State Freshman had five hits to pace a solid offensive effort as her team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of the Academy of Art in their season opener on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park, CA.  The Sonoma Seawolves came from behind in both games, winning the opener, 5-3, and the nightcap, 8-3.  The wins push the Seawolves’ record to 2-0 on the season. What a way to kick-off the new Springball season! After coordinating with parents, 10U Coach Joe Uribe and his assistants organized a Sunday morning “kidnapping” of the new team members.  A caravan went from house-to-house waking up the girls early Sunday morning and taking them to IHOP – in their PJ’s – to meet each other and get the season going.  In addition to muchin’ on some excellent pancakes, the team was tasked with coming up with a team name using only the uniform color – kelly green – as a guideline. And with that, the 10U Holy Guacamole’s were born!

SHB “Soul Surfers” 8U team had a great time this Winterball season. In an exciting game, Hannah Canfield aka HANNAHTIME #10 led the SHB 8U “Soul Surfers” to a 7-2 victory, pitching 4 strike outs. Hannah and her fellow “Soul Surfers” are looking forward to an awesome 2012 Spring ball season…so don’t forget to register and join in the fun!

It was a chilly but beautiful day at the fields with the crazy sock-wearing CAUTION playing the Surf City HOT SHOTS! Both teams had a win with Caution taking the first game, 8 – 3, and the Hot shots achieving their first win of the season in the second game, 7 – 6. Way to go, girls!

SHB 14U1 team AFLAC played at the West Grove Halloween Spooktacular, taking 2nd place in the one-day tournament. The girls were on fire from the first pitch against Fountain Valley in the first game winning 6-0, followed up in the second game against Cerritos, again winning 6-0.  After a one game break, the bat’s and pitching came alive again with a 15-2 win over Cypress!  The Championship Game was exciting, with AFLAC  eventually falling to Buena Park.   There were many hits and great plays all day long by everyone on the team. Way to go team AFLAC !

This was an awesome catch by Sammi Schofield during one of the games between our 10U select team and Orange Canyon. This ball was well hit in the gap between 2nd and short and Sammi was able to run it down and catch it back handed for the out. It was a great game by both teams with Orange Canyon taking the win.

Yes winning is great!  Exercise and learning new skills are also very important.  However, life lessons taught on the field, that carry over to our everyday lives are paramount.  How to get along with others and work through challenges together.  It teaches our youth the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship.  It teaches them the thrill of winning and how to be a gracious loser.  It also teaches them that nothing comes easy.  If you want to be a better player, you must practice.  That there is no “I” in Team.

To the parents, I say, let the kids play.  We have had our time on the field.  We need to realize that this is a bunch of girls playing a game.  Nothing more.  So instead of taking it so seriously, go to the fields with the intent to simply watch a softball game.  Maybe grab a meal at the snackbar and say hello to a friend.

The holidays are upon us.  It is a time to be with family and friends.  So at the Turkey Tournament this Thanksgiving, remember to cheer for the girls, they are the ones playing the game.
